G'day, I found out a couple of days ago that my Dad has terminal Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He's gone in for an endoscopy today for some tests and the preliminary results are that the tumour is inoperable. We meet with the Doctors tomorrow for a more detailed prognosis, however the only real unknown is finding out how much time we will have with Dad. As an engineer, my initial action upon hearing this news was to investigate the facts, gather data, and try and find out everything I could about this disease. It made for truly horrible reading. Not only is this type of cancer incredibly difficult to beat, it's incredibly difficult to detect until it is basically terminal. It's too late for my Dad but I was wondering if there was any way for people to volunteer their time and expertise to assist in the search for a reliable, early detection test... and one day, a cure? I regularly perform big data analytics as part of my job in identifying problems and opportunities in large industrial processes. Perhaps I could apply the same capability in finding markers in test and genetic data? Cheers, Gavin
