Everyone is different and unfortunately there is no playbook that anyone of us follows. For me I was on survival mode for a long time so I didn't have time to process. Once things quieted down then thoughts started to emerge. I would suggest therapy and/or support group. Meditation and prayer helped me as well. It's easy to get caught in the doom and if you stay there it will be that much harder to fight the physical aspects of the disease. I pray that he will be open to trying something new.
