There's always hope.
Sometimes hope changes, but there are always things to hope for.
As the disease fight continues, you may find that you sometimes hope for the little things. A trip to a beloved places. A visit from a relative/child/friend. Laughing. Enjoying a favorite food. A peaceful walk.
When you focus on the long term too much, it can make you crazy.
Your friend is doing very, very well. The genetic testing is a great idea. He is the perfect perfect candidate for clinical trials using immunotherapy agents, so I am hoping that is the mysterious drug he is taking.
Keeping as active as he can be, eating well, and aggressively treating any depression when it rears its head are useful both today, and for his long term success.
We're all hoping for you and your friend too!
