Eating was difficult. I could not tolerate more than 1 spoon of food. Reglan will help move the food along. Weight loss can be a problem especially if he is already thin.
Diarrhea is relentless. I still cannot control it even with anti-diarrhea meds.
More than likely your dad will need and enzyme to help digest food. Creon and Viokase are the ones I have heard about. I take Creon. Without it I have horrible abdominal pain. My food will not digest on it's own. Without a duodenum digestion and absorption are non existent for me. He also may become anemic so watch out for that.
They will probably offer him chemo 2 months after surgery. You'll have to decide if that is best for him. Chemo offered is Gemcitabine for 26 weeks. Radiation may also be offered.
Everyone is different. Some people of this board did extremely well after whipple but for me I had numerous issues and am still recovering.
