I had Whipple surgery in 2002, and was prescribed PPIs (first Prevacid, then Nexium) and took them for a couple of years. I had side affects with Prevacid - headaches, extreme dry mouth. I found Nexium was the source of stomach pain that I attributed to the surgery. Plus it caused my stomach to make strange noises. (seriously) I did hava problems with acid reflux after surgery. I stopped taking the PPIs. Tried adjusting diet, which helped but did not eliminate the acid reflux probme. What worked for me, and still works is Famotidine. I take 20 mg. before breakfast, and 20 mg. and hour before dinner. Can eat pretty much anything I want with no problems. I have to be careful with anything containing tomato paste. Stopping the PPI's was difficult, especially at first. And then staying off them trying to adjust diet was also difficult. I'm very glad I found and tried Famotidine. It has none of the bad side affects or long term risks as the PPI's. PPIs may be necessary for some, but my doctors say they have serious risks with long term use. The doctors agree Famotidine is safe. I have been taking it for several years now. Hope if you try it, it works as well for you.
