First, I'm not suprised to see MD Anderson at the top of the heap. We went there from the Pittsburgh, PA area. Around here the phrase 'being thrown under the bus' is exactly what will happen to a person.

It's interesting to see that the local hospital systems: UPMC (Univ. of Pgh. Medical Center, associated with the Univ. of Pgh. ''Pitt Univ.'') and Allegheny General Hospital System owned by Highmark Blue Shield (yup, the hospital is owned by an insurance company) don't rank that high. They are in fierce competition within this region and basically are cannibalizing themselves and forgetting about the patients as they fight for the market share and also to increase profits at the same time.

Clicking onto the detailed profile is worth it. At many hospitals safety must rank very low. I assume this could be everything from infections to unintended deaths. But since doctors get to bury their mistakes, my guess is that if the ranking is noted as being low for safety, then in actuality it is much lower.
