Unfortunately, all of the typical chemo combos are hard on platelets. And the older you are, and the loner you are on chemo, the more your counts tend to be affected. It is very common to need to hold off on chemo or decrease the dose due to drops in counts. Lots of wive's tales about how to improve platelets, but none work.

There is a growth factor that specifically works on platelets. However, it is almost never used. I believe his is because it is very expensive, it has potentially more side effects, and it often doesn't work very well. A few on this board have used it.

Out doctor would not even discuss it.
