Diabetes with PC and/or after surgery is kind of a separate type of diabetes... not really 1 or 2. In some ways it is more similar to 1, except not as extreme if you still have some functioning pancreas left. Many docs will try meds first (metformin is a MUST for us, as it may have some anti-cancer properties), but many will progress to needing insulin replacement. Do not feel like you need to really become rigid with diet/exercise like typical patients with Type 2 diabetes because for many that will not be sufficient because you aren't a type 2 diabetic. It always helps to be healthy nonetheless!

I would actually recommend being followed by an endocrinologist for management of your diabetes. This is too complicated and unique to be managed by your primary care OR your oncologist. It is definitely to your benefit to have your diabetes very well treated for your overall health, so see an endocrinologist who specializes in diabetes who is more up to date in the best treatments. It helped us so much. Just to have a doctor/nurse to call when the sugars get out of wack to save another trip to the doctor was a godsend.
