Pancreas CancerDad facing diagnosis, metastas was posted 02/28/2015 01:24 am by Anonymous
We are facing a pancreatic cancer diagnosis for my dad. My family is reeling,
and we are currently waiting for a definitive biopsy (to be performed next
Thursday) to determine what type of cancer we are facing. There is some
question as to the diagnosis because there are nodules in his lungs which are
very cavitary rather than solid, so, not typical of pancreatic cancer
metastases. These nodules are also very small, with the largest under 2mm. A
brush biopsy of the pancreatic tumor performed during a procedure to insert a
stent (the tumor was obstructing his bile duct), was 'inconclusive/negative'
because it does not seem that the pancreatic tumor has invaded the duct. His
CA 19-9 level is also lower than the doctors would expect for the amount of
metastasis seen in his lungs... we still feel like there are so many
unknowns, but we are preparing for a pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Does anyone
have experience with this location for metastasis?
I would so appreciate any advice you have for this journey. It is
overwhelming to be learning so much as you go. Right now, my biggest concern
is helping him get a good night's sleep. While he is not experiencing pain,
there is some indigestion and reflux around bedtime, and I think he is
dealing with depression (which we just learned can be brought on by the
pancreatic tumor) and a lot of anxiety as he faces the reality of cancer and
treatment options. He is very worried about chemotherapy's side effects.
Any advice is much appreciated!
