My dad also started this journey with Gem/Abx for 4 months and had a good response!! It has been 26 months now since his diagnosis and so I don't recall the exacts about all my research at that time but I think I remember the accepted standard dose from the trials was Gemzar 1200mg m2 and Abraxane 125mg m2 given 3 weeks on and 1 week off.
My dads medical oncologist at MD Anderson started him on Gemzar 600mg m2 and Abraxane 125mg m2 given every other week. I flipped because I felt we needed to treat as aggressive as possible, no one was giving us much hope for overall survival time that was long enough for me and I wanted the problem fixed!!! So I addressed with the oncologist why she would cheat my dad out of the full dose of Gemzar. She explained that as long as she had been doing this she had learned that most patients can only tolerate the Gemzar at the 600mg dose and if she started him any higher it would just cause complications, missed treatments, and reduction of dose until he was backed down to the 600mg anyway so thats just where she has learned its best to start.
My dad tolerated his treatment very well and after his first 2 treatments his CA 19-9 went down from 857 to 83. His first scan after 8 weeks showed small decrease in size of tumor. 2nd Scan 8 weeks later showed more decrease in size of tumor. At that point the oncologist sent him to radiation oncologist for IMRT with Xeloda for 6 weeks. That was in January - February of 2013. He has had no signs of active cancer since then and has been on NO treatments.... We have been so BLESSED !!!
Gods Blessings to you and your Mother,
