I was in a similar situation as you. I had a 1 cm nueroendocrine tumor
located in the tail of my pancreas. My best friend was being treated for
carcinoid by Dr. Kvols at Moffit and I went with him as his advocate, this is
before I knew I had a neuroendocrine tumor myself. Dr. Kvols is a noted
expert. After I was diagnosed with the tumor, I read a paper co-authored by
Dr. Kovols called 'Aggressive Surgical Resection in the Management of
Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors: When Is It Indicated?'
My initial surgeon suggested surveillence. I took the time to educate myself
regarding the results of my EUS with FNA (biopsy). I chose to seek surgical
resection before my benign tumor became malignant. Pancreatic neuroendocrine
tumors are considered benign only if they haven't metastisized. Nobody could
guarantee me that it would metastisize so I decided to have it out before it
I was 42 when I had the surgery. I became insulin dependent after the surgery
which I knew was a possibility. Dealing with insulin has been more of a
challenge that I thought it would be but I manage. I have no regrets
regarding my dedision. I made an informed decision that I could live with.
Best of luck with your decision.
