Hi there - I had a similar sized tumor in the tail of my pancreas, and I had a distal pancreatectomy and splenectomy. It was almost able to be done laparoscopically. The surgeon had trouble 'closing' my pancreas up and had to use clips instead of staples. It had everything to do with my pancreas, though, so very specific to me. This had never happened to him before, and he has been doing this surgery for forever. (Boston--Brigham & Women's) I ended up with a hybrid surgery.

My understanding from all the doctors that I have seen is that surgery will give you your best chance for a cure. So, if your doctor feels that you are in good enough health for surgery, it probably makes sense. I would say that the surgery--no matter what type--is complicated, and the complications are real. I ended up with a pancreatic leak, which delayed further treatment by several months. But I am really glad I did it. I am one year post-surgery and still have no visible signs of cancer growth.

Best of luck!

Jill
