It's possible, I've been battling lung mets for over 2 years now, never on gemzar alone. I have been on Gemzar/Tarceva and then Gemzar/Abraxane and those both kept me close to stable with only slight progression. Folfirinox has been the best for me and reduced the cancer but it's a rough combo so that may be why it wasn't offerred in your Dad's situation. You didn't mention age or any other health issues but those are the kind of things that might make Folfirinox too hard to tolerate.

I hope they can find a chemo or combo that will help more than Gemzar alone that is tolerable for your Dad, you may need to push for something stronger if it's not offered, ask a lot of questions and they might decide to go a little more aggressive with the chemo. best of luck.
