Try to get your original doctor to file the diagnosis date as far back as you can get it, to first symptoms if possible. Every month you can go back is that much more $. When they ask about onset, tell them when he FIRST starting feeling ill, whether he was working or not at the time does not matter.

Also, after 2 years on disability he will get Medicare. They count that from date of filing, so the sooner you do it the better.
