like, she says about Yervoy ' which appeared the following year at $120,000 for four injections.' She doesn't note that the four injections are a full course, and that, for a lucky small percentage, it does seem to CURE the metastatic melanoma - it's gone. Hmphhh...but since the percentage of these people is less than 50%, it doesn't much change MEDIAN survival.
Speaking of which, she notes that Provenge patients '...lived an average of four months longer than the comparison group...' by which I suspect she means median survival was four months longer. Median is not the same as average (the mean is hte average) - they are similar measures of central tendancy but there is a subtle but very meaningful difference, which is why mostly all comparative studies use median survial, not mean (mean is harder to measure also since, if someone lives a long time with or without the treatmetn, you can't take an average until you know how long...).
My point is, she doesn't REALLY seem to know enough about what she' s writing about to speak - I've seen this in other topics where some well meaning author takes some sound bites from doctors or scientists and writes an article that gets things all wrong, just 'cause they're comfortable writing about something they don't really understand.
Teh article doesn't capture so much...and REALLY doesn't seem to seek to...it's an editorial supporting a point of view with limited facts and no contrasting view points.
In my (clearly not humble enough...) opinion, Ms. Beil should stick to
writing about something she understands which is probably Lindsy Lohan's
hotel bills or the like. Sorry to be cruel or perhapos unchristian, but this
is two sensative and critical a topic for this style of junk journalism.
