Who is telling you this? What kind of doctor? This is shockingly inaccurate and I am hoping that you may have misunderstood, or their explanation was simply very very poor.

Is your oncologist communicating with this 'doctor' who is discussing TPN with you? I have never heard of an oncologist speaking in such a way.

This is simply incorrect.

It is true that the best way for the body to absorb nutrition is through the gut, rather then IV. It is true that we do not give patients TPN simply because of weight loss due to cancer. But your situation is different.

But why are you asking for TPN now? Isn't his obstruction resolved? Then nutrition should be through the gut - either by eating or a tube (G or J-tube), if necessary.

I sincerely hope that you can find a motivated, and educated, gastroenterologist. Your husband definitely needs another opinion, and a close collaboration with your oncologist.
