Frank's MD said this....It's kind of a catch 22. Whether TPN or regular food or tube feeding, this would apply. The particular cancer Frank had, (Which was Adinocarcinoma-sorry about the spelling) feeds on muscle. Regarless of how he was being fed, if he were to gain weight in the form of muscle, the cancer would feed on it. So it was, do we give Frank enough food (he was tube fed and then supplimented with pudding and ice cream and scrambled eggs and shakes) or do we just give him the basic daily nutrients to 'stay alive'. There were times when I thought I could see Frank's facial cheeks filling out a bit, only to have them a few days later look sunken again. Now, I know it doesn't flutuate that fast...at least I don't think it would. But in my mind, it was more of the hope that I could see him gaining ground. Which certainly wasn't the case. I really think this is a very touchy subject and I certainly don't want to create an unproductive thread.
