My husband has been taking statins for a couple of years. Our PCP always does a routine blood glucose test as part of blood work. At his appointment in January this year, his PCP added the A1C test to check his average day to day glucose levels. It was fine (5.2) thankfully. For people who need to be on statins, it is probably a good idea to ask your doctor to add this test if they have not already done so. The report I saw on these new FDA warnings also noted that the number of people who experience memory impairment from statins is very small, and the problem clears up as soon as the medication is discontinued.
