Actually, the exercises DO make the symptoms worse for many - but this is transient. When you repeat them (like 3 or 4 or 5 times in a row), the symptoms will decrease. Also, the symptoms are often worse when your head is turned to one side vs. the other, during the maneuver.
Actually, the fact that they got worse confirms the vertigo is likely due to
an inner ear problem, and the maneuvers are the best way to treat it. Most
people will also get better on their own.
