I don't want to alarm you but last week my husband had severe back pain. Four weeks ago, his CT scan was completely clear and all tumor markers low normal. In the ER they did a CT scan and it showed four tumors in his liver. We are in shock. He is in Sloan now and had a liver biopsy today, but they have already scheduled him for chemo on tuesday so it looks like they are sure it is mets. I'm not saying this is the case with your brotherinlaw, but when we went to the ER, we weren't even thinking in terms of cancer or spread, we just thought it was his back. Now everything is different and we pray. Have him bet a CT scan and then hopefully you'll celebrate when it is status quo.
