The rate of recurrance is very high. And even if you remove everything, re-route the digestive system and have follow up chemo and/or radiation, there still may be stray cells that insidiously attack other organs. These are facts, unfortunately. And despite the rarity of young people getting PC, they do. I'm sorry for your friend. Hopefully his treatment will buy him a long time so you can be together.
