The 5-year survival rate for surgically resected, localized PC is still low. This report says 16%: http://health.usnews.com/health-conditions/cancer/pancreatic-cancer

It could be on the order of 25-40% for patients who have multimodal (chemo, radiation, surgery) therapy. I had pre-surgical chemoradiation and even though I had clean surgical margins and no positive nodes, my doctor also recommended more chemo just to be sure.

You are right that this cancer is very, very rare in people as young as your friend. It's not fair.

But as far as surgery being a cure, nope, I'm sorry that just isn't the case except for a very select few.
