I'm a recovering alcoholic so I quit drinking 5 years before I was diagnosed.
My surgeon has said he didn't think my past drinking caused my PC, but who
knows. I do know that drinking to excess can and does lead to a variety of
health issues. I also know that alcohol is probably the most common form of
self-medicating that people with depression turn to, and since alcohol is a
depressant it's probably the worst thing a depressed person can overindulge
in.
My worry would be that with the modified plumbing of us whipple surgery
people that alcohol may not process in the body the same way it did before
the surgery. There is evidence that certain people may be predisposed to
alcohol addiction because their bodies chemical breakdown of alcohol is
different that most people. One of the easiest ways to identify people who
have this anomaly is how they react to a few drinks. most normal folks start
feeling the effects and think 'Thats enough for me'. Others, like me, think '
Wow this is great, I need more'.
I know my body processes food differently now, I don't think it's that much
of a stretch to think it may process alcohol differently as well.
Personally I have no desire to try it out.
