What is his primary insurance? Medicare?

If so, then absolutely Medigap is key. Totally worth the money. I think the Medigap plans can vary from state to state, and can be a little burdensome to sift through. The costs can vary widely. There is usually a state office that can help answer questions, so take a look at Websites for your state. It might be worth just looking at a few of the big name/popular plans (eg. Blue Cross) to see what the numbers look like.

Yes, it is always stressful to do this under time pressure.
