Each state collects the data of deaths by any means and reports it annually. If you go the state government website for your state you can see the data. Most of the information is on-line in pdf format. That information is then complied and use by a variety of resources.

While the numbers of PC cases is rising, it is not rising in a dramatic fashion compared to the general population. Of, course, once you are affected by this type of cancer - it seems like there is a epidemic. 43,000 new cases a year is alot but spread out over the entire US population - it is still considered 'rare'. Go figure.
