THIS IS ABOUT MY FATHER WHO TURNED 74 TODAY. APRIL 28, 2000 HE UNDERWENT THE WHIPPLE PROCEDURE FOR A TUMOR IN THE AMPULLA OF VATER, THAT EXTENDED INTO THE PANCREATIC HEAD AND INTO THE DUODNEUM. THE TUMOR MEASURED 6.5CM. THE SURGEON EXPLORED THE LIVER, STOMACH, AND ALL SURROUNDING ORGANS FOR TUMORS AND FOUND NOTHING. HE BIOPSIED SEVERAL LYMPH NODES WHICH WERE NEGATIVE. WHEN THE PATHOLOGY REPORT CAME BACK IT SHOWED THAT A LYMPH NODE WAS INVOLVED. NOW THREE MONTHS LATER WE WENT TO THE FIRST ONCOLOGY APPOINTMENT TO FIND OUT THAT WE MISSED THE WINDOW OF OPPURTUNITY FOR ANY CHEMOTHERAPY TO BE DONE. THEY SAID THAT IT COULD NOT BE DONE MORE THAN SIX WEEKS AFTER THE SURGERY. THEY ALSO STATED THAT THE CANCER WOULD COME BACK PROBABLY IN THE LIVER AND WHEN IT SHOWED THAT THEY WOULD REVIEW THEIR OPTIONS AT THE TIME. MY DAD HAS NOT GAINED WEIGHT SINCE THE SURGERY HOWEVER HE HAS NOT LOST WEIGHT EITHER. HE IS ABLE TO EAT WITHOUT DIFFICULTY. WE ARE JUST TAKING ONE DAY AT A TIME. BEING A NURSE I AM AWARE OF THE OUTCOMES HOWEVER MY MOTHER IS IN DENIAL AND CAN'T RELAY THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE SITUATION TO HER. HOPEFULLY I CAN HELP MY DAD AND MOTHER TO LIVE EVERY DAY TO THE FULLEST.
