My mother had her consultation at MSK today. After reading all the negative comments on this board, I was expecting to leave unhappy. But I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by the staff and the facilities. At no point did I (and more importantly, my mother) feel uncomfortable. The staff focused on treatment, not on statistics. There was no doomsday attitude as noted by other posters. Everybody there was positive, cheerful, and helpful. She will likely begin a chemo protocol of gemcitabine and oxaliplatin in two weeks. The doctor did mention she might be eligible for a clinical study they are starting there, but I'm not sure that should be our first move.

She needs another CT scan, as there appear to be questionable nodules on her lungs and a possible bile duct obstruction. Also, they did find a blood clot in her legs, which is likely causing her severe leg pain. They put her on daily blood thinner injections as a result. And they are trying a new narcotic for the pain. So far it's not working, but it's only been four hours.

Has anyone else on this board experienced severe leg pain? Her pain is so bad that she can't walk without crying. I know she'd feel much more positive about everything if she could just get this pain under control. She can't take oxycodone because it makes her ill. Right now we're trying hydrocodone. Any recommendations?
