Whew! I've been the recipient of a few zingers like you got thrown. I felt literally blown away. You really captured the essence of it with 'I knew it, but now I know it.' I soooooo know that feeling.

For what it's worth, and I know the PA is just being honest, but in a truthfulness -- her words are not a 'go by'. She was trying to be compassionate with honesty, but REALLY, she does NOT know. Now, what her words did serve to do, is to give you fair warning that life is short and every moment, every day is precious. So don't waste the ones you've got, instead savor them and keep your priorities in order.

I understand too about the 'failure to communicate' on serious medical stuff. I remember thinking, 'why can't my dr. just hand me a tri-fold pamphlet on this? I think they must assume everyone has experience with cancer, but for people focused on living, Cancerland is its own planet.
