I'm sorry that the first 2 replies you have received were so unkind. You are indeed involved in a very serious situation, but compassion is what is needed here as well as truth.

Gemzar will probably not make your friend lose her hair but it will also not cure her. She really needs a more aggressive chemo protocol if she is to have any amount of time left to spend with her child. Radiation might also help her. Some Stage IV pc patients live longer than others, perhaps due to more aggressive chemo. That being said, she will need a lot of help with child care, housework, meal preparation, laundry and whatever else needs to be done to keep a home running. She will be kept busy just trying to stay alive. She will be nauseated, lose weight, have pain and need a lot of support from family, friends, church groups and whoever else is willing.

Dr. Robert Fine @ Columbia in NYC has done extraordinary things for some pc patients; you might consider a consultation with him. Or M. D. Anderson in Houston or Johns Hopkins in Baltimore; these 3 are considered to be among the best when it comes to treating pc.

Whatever you decide to do, keep coming back here; there is a lot of knowledge here and this board is very good for venting and support.

Best of luck.
