ICU is the norm. My loved one didn't need ICU but since it was already arranged, she had to stay there for a little under 24 hours, until they had a standard room available.

Diabetes is not a given. I don't know the rate, but I remember our surgeon saying most are not diabetic.

Age and general health will always be a factor in any surgery and any disease. It should help him get through the surgery with less issues, or get through complications easier if he has any. As for the cancer, it can help with that too and should he need chemo for a recurrence later down the road, he may be more easily able to do the stronger combos than an older more fragile person.
